Program Manager, NSF Center for Pandemic Insights
David Coil is the Program Manager for the NSF Center for Pandemic Insights. He coordinates and facilitates research across the Center, with a particular emphasis on the technology development within the Center.
Previously David was the Public Health Coordinator at UC Davis where he oversaw public health activities on campus as well as supervised the clinical diagnostic lab and radiology at UCD Student Health. During the COVID-19 pandemic he was the project manager for the UC Davis COVID mass testing operation, as well as heavily involved in environmental surveillance and genome sequencing for SARS-CoV-2.
Prior to 2020, he was a Project Scientist responsible for supervising undergraduate research projects in microbiology, microbial ecology, and genomics in the Eisen Lab at UC Davis. He also helped to manage other research projects/collaborations in the lab including microbial sampling, metagenomics, and bacterial genome assembly. And finally, David was the Co-PI and project manager for the microBEnet project, which was focused on communication in the context of studies of microbiology of the built environment. David is the creator of “Gut Check: The Microbiome Game” which is available in both a free-to-print and commercial versions.
